John Lewis sales up 60.4% in Black Friday week

John Lewis & Partners saw its total sales surge by 60.4% year-on-year last week after Black Friday took place a week later this year.

Compared with the Black Friday period in 2018, sales were up 2.1% as the department store enjoyed a new record week of trade.

John Lewis & Partners ran its Black Friday promotions over an 11 day period this year compared to eight days in 2018. Total sales for the first 10 days of the event were up 9.5% compared to the same period around Black Friday last year.

The retailer said the busiest hour for customers to shop for deals online last week was 9am to 10am on 29 November. In addition, there was a 43% increase in traffic to the John Lewis & Partners App in the week compared to the corresponding seven days last year. Several shops enjoyed record sales during the week.

Looking at the various departments, fashion sales were up 71% after trade was boosted by record sales in the menswear, nursery and beauty categories.

Home sales rose by 18% while electrical and home technology sales climbed by 81%. The retailer said the white goods, audio and small electricals categories performed particularly well with best selling products including Apple Airpods and Google Home Mini.
