John Lewis makes 'excellent' start to the year with sales up 23% last week
John Lewis has revealed it had an “excellent” start to the post-Christmas period, with sales surpassing £150 million to mark an increase of 23% on the corresponding week last year.
The week included the first day of clearance in shops which last year fell into the previous week's trade.
Home sales were up 16.9% year-on-year with furniture, textiles and carpets enjoying their biggest weeks ever. The beds and bedroom category put in a particularly strong performance with a sales increase of 28%.
Fashion sales climbed by 28.9% with menswear a standout success driven by an “outstanding” week in formalwear. Womenswear sales grew by 27% with strong sales in both cold-weather and new-season products.
Looking at electricals and home technology, sales increased by 24.2% year-on-year. Some of the best performing items included floor care products and juicers as customers kicked off their New Year cleaning and fitness regimes.
Christine Kasoulis, buying director for home at John Lewis, said: “In terms of channels, it was a very good week for both branches and online. All but one branch beat last year. Johnlewis.com continued its impressive performance at 35% up on last year, with another exceptional week for smartphone traffic.
“After a strong start, with further markdowns live this week, we're hopeful for a successful clearance.”
