High street faces Christmas crunch

Friday December 21st 2007

The recent surge in UK shopper numbers failed to keep up momentum throughout the week, according to the latest figures from FootFall.

The poor turnout on the High Street since last weekend means retailers are now facing one final 'crunch' weekend to turn Christmas 2007 into a retail success.

Last Sunday, the High Street saw a jump in footfall of 8.9% compared to 2006. However, figures from the Retail FootFall Index show this dropping to 1.3% on Monday before plummeting below 2006 levels by 5.9% on Tuesday and 8.6% on Wednesday.

Martin Davies from Experian comments: “The festive mood amongst shoppers trailed off after Monday and by Tuesday activity on the High Street began to lull. This weekend will be critical for those retailers who have failed to keep footfall flowing through their stores throughout the month.

“However, falling footfall does not necessarily equate to falling sales. Channel choice is becoming more and more diverse, so while consumers may not be making as many regular shopping trips to their local High Street they still have the power to spend in big bursts during shopping centre visits or via online channels.

“With online ordering deadlines passing and time running out for big destination centre trips, all eyes will be on the High Street this weekend, with the hope being that the additional trading day on Monday will mean it's not another silent night for retailers.”
