Halfords’ cycle sales boosted by Tour de France

Halfords revenues increased by 7.9% in the 13 weeks to 27 June as the retailer benefited from a surge in cycle sales in the run-up to the Tour de France.

Retail like-for-like sales climbed by 7.9% with like-for-like cycling sales soaring by 21.3% on the same period last year. Halfords said premium bike sales were particularly strong, rising by 35.1%.

Halfords chief executive Matt Davies said: “Halfords continued to drive top-line growth in the quarter, with the cycling category delivering another exceptional performance. Our actions resulted in growth across all elements of cycling reflecting our continued focus in the category, enhanced by favourable weather and increased interest in the Tour de France.”

Revenues at Halfords’ autocentres division rose by 9.4% with like-for-like sales rising by 4.3%.

Online retail sales climbed by 13.1% driven by a strong performance in cycling.
