Cortifiel is preparing for the next phase of its entry into the UK

Spanish retail giant Cortifiel is preparing for the next phase of its entry into the UK market with a decision expected early in the New Year.

Cortifiel is one of the giants of the fashion world, with five brands occupying 1,400 stores worldwide and generating an annual turnover of EUR1.2 billion. But until this year it has been reluctant to enter the UK. Now that could be about to change.
Earlier this year Cortifiel struck a deal with Debenhams to operate trial concessions for two of its brands: Springfield, which specialises in young fashion, and Cortifiel, which has more of a classic offer. Speaking at the MAPIC convention in Cannes, Tesca Dinkler, Cortifiel's franchise executive, said early indications from the trial were positive.
“It's so far so good,” she said. The company will make a decision on further expansion in February 2009, and Dinkler said locations in Manchester and Liverpool were likely to be next on Cortifiel's shopping list. But she warned: “I think we're always going to find the UK challenging because of its high rents and its high level of competition.”
