Brown urges Britons to stop wasting food

"unnecessary" purchases are contributing to price rises, growing waste and emissions.

Speaking on his way to the G8 summit in Japan yesterday, Brown said:"If we are to get food prices down, we must also do more to deal with unecessary demand such as all of us doing more to cut food waste which is costing the average household in Britain around £8 per week".

A government study has found that the UK wastes 4m tonnes of food every year, adding up to £420 to a family's shopping bills. The study also showed that the poorest families were the hardest hit as they spend more on food basics.
