Blacks Leisure expects losses to widen

Archived article dated Friday October 3rd 2008

Blacks Leisure has warned that it expects to report a wider pre-tax loss in the first half following poor trading in August.

The group now expects that the loss before tax for the first half will be approximately £4.5m before exceptional items, compared to a loss before tax and exceptional items of £0.6m in the previous year. During the first half the Outdoor business recorded a like for like sales decrease of 5.2 per cent against a strong comparative in the previous year (2007: +5.6%). The Boardwear market was below expectations, with like for like sales falling by 16.1 per cent. Group like for like sales were down 7.7 per cent in the first half.

"Trading in the first few weeks of the second half has been more encouraging, with September trading in line with expectations. The full year performance will, as ever, depend upon the important fourth quarter trading period" Blacks said.
