750,000 shoppers hit London's West End as Christmas count down begins

Friday November 21st 2008

New West End Company, the retail body for London's West End, reports that October footflow for the London West End, provided by Springboard, was down 0.8% year-on-year, defying the national drop in High Street footfall, which was down 6.6%.

- October marks the 35th consecutive month that the London West End has outperformed the rest of the UK in a tough economic climate. With forty Christmas shopping days to go, last weekend saw 750,000 shoppers hit London's West End. Figures released on Monday revealed strong footflow increases for Friday, Saturday and Sunday; the first weekend since both Oxford Street and Regent Street's Christmas Lights were switch on by Sugababes and McFly respectively.

Richard Dickinson, Chief Executive of New West End Company, said: “Even Sunday's constant drizzle did not deter shoppers, providing the most popular shopping day for the West End last weekend with footfall up 17.4%. Retailers reported a continued strong international presence but said UK domestic shoppers were also notably out in force - with gift selections selling respectable quantities.”
